Thanksgiving and Comforting Life Verses

November 22, 2017

For me, “life verses” are those that I hold onto, read often, think about, and apply towards the circumstances that I find myself in; especially when I’m grieving or find myself in a dilemma that requires God moving in my life and/or in the lives of loved ones.

Reading the truth in God’s Word always comforts me and lessens the grief that I may be feeling because of any unforeseen event.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day.  It is a time to celebrate and give thanks to God for all of our blessings.  When certain loved ones are not there, it is normal to feel the loss of their presence; whether they have died, live too far away, or are, unfortunately, estranged from their families.

1Th 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle [fn] encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.

ESV Footnotes
disorderly, or undisciplined

It is interesting to note that the admonishment is not only for the “idle,” but also for the “disorderly, or undisciplined.”  That covers a LOT of people these days!

1Th 5:15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

It can be very difficult to “seek to do good to” someone (or, people) who intentionally hurt you through their evil acts against you.  But, what’s the point of being a saved Christian if our intention is to “repay evil for evil?”  We can admonish those who do evil against us, but avoid repaying with evil.  Maybe that’s where the idea to “kill them with kindness” came from?

1Th 5:16 Rejoice always
1Th 5:17 pray without ceasing,
1Th 5:18  give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I like to take these three verses and apply them together.  How can we “rejoice always” when horrible and terrible things happen within families, in our nation, and across the world?

Praying without ceasing means to keep up whatever you are focused on praying for.  I recall praying for the salvation of my own dad since I was a 7-year old little girl.  Decades later, after more than 10 years of studying the Bible, God used me to witness to my dad just 5 months before he passed away from lung cancer.

Notice that 1 Thessalonians 5:18 doesn’t say,  ‘give thanks for all circumstances;’ it says to “give thanks in all circumstances.”  This is a reminder that even if we don’t see the outcome of any circumstance (whether it be positive or negative), God has it in His hands and His Will be done!  “For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

I can’t even explain, right now, how comforting these verses are for me.  One day, I will share a recent experience which was devastating for me and our family.  In the meantime, I can hold onto another one of my favorite chapters (Romans 8) and the particular life verses shared below from that chapter.

 Rom 8:34
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.[fn]

Rom 8:35
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

Rom 8:36
As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

Rom 8:37
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Rom 8:38
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,

Rom 8:39
nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

In addition, the following portion of commentary from David Brown at the Blue Letter Bible site are comforting:

(10) “The whole universe, with all that it contains, so far as it is good, is the friend and ally of the Christian; and, so far as it is evil, is more than a conquered foe” ( Rom 8:35-39 ) [HODGE]. (11) Are we who “have tasted that the Lord is gracious,” both “kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation” ( 1Pe 1:5 ), and embraced in the arms of Invincible Love? Then surely, while “building ourselves up on our most holy faith,” and “praying in the Holy Ghost,” only the more should we feel constrained to “keep ourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” ( Jud 1:20, 21 ).

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 24, 2016

I am so thankful for many blessings!  First and foremost is thankfulness for the love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness afforded to me through my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Second, I’m so grateful for the wonderful and loving family that we have!  Being a wife, mother, and now grandmother is the most important role I have and nothing else could ever compare!

What are you thankful for?

May the blessings of God through our Lord Jesus Christ be upon each of you as you celebrate with family and friends!

Proclaim With The Voice of Thanksgiving

November 29, 2014

Even though today is two days after Thanksgiving Day, I think that we should remain thankful to God always, and proclaim with grateful hearts our love and thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ. Why? Because He loves us and He alone is our salvation!  Praise God for all that He has done for us!

We need to be grateful, not only on Thanksgiving Day, but every day, for family and friends who share their lives and love with us, and give us joy in our hearts.

The Bible mentions the term “thanksgiving” several times in many different verses.

Some of my favorites:

Psa 26:7

That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving,
And tell of all Your wondrous works.

Psa 69:30

I will praise the name of God with a song,
And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

Psa 95:2

Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

Psa 100:4

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

Psa 107:22

Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And declare His works with rejoicing.

Psa 116:17

I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the LORD.

We can even see the message of salvation (and, our need to share it with others!) in many of the verses!

Jon 2:9

But I will sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay what I have vowed.
Salvation is of the LORD.”

Phl 4:6

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

Phl 4:7

and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Col 2:6

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

Col 2:7

rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it [fn] with thanksgiving.

Col 4:2

Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;

Col 4:3

meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains,

Col 4:4

that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

Col 4:5

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

We are told of the coming Millennium via Isaiah’s prophecy and the End Times via Revelation 7:

Isa 51:3

For the LORD will comfort Zion,
He will comfort all her waste places;
He will make her wilderness like Eden,
And her desert like the garden of the LORD;
Joy and gladness will be found in it,
Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

Rev 7:9

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,

Rev 7:10

and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

Rev 7:11

All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,

Rev 7:12

saying:

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
Amen.”

We defend our Constitutional Republic and Charters of Freedom, especially when speaking out against destructive social and political issues. As followers of our Savior and Lord, we should boldly stand up for Jesus Christ in our present circumstances. He is our Savior, Lord, and King, and His love needs to be shed abroad in our hearts and in our world - now.
