Have Faith in God’s Love

February 13, 2018

It is so heartening to wake up in the wee hours of the morning and find a post that I needed to read today.  I often think that God has a way of nudging us towards what we need to know, especially when in the throes of sadness, depression, loneliness – you name the angst.  Then along comes a fellow Christian’s sharing of Scripture which shares having faith in God’s love and brings peace.   Such peace eases the pain or suffering that one may be going through.

That happened for me when I read Raymond Candy’s post entitled Keys to the Kingdom: Receiving God’s Peace.

The entire essay is excellent and I encourage reading it all at his site. Here is an excerpt:

To have faith in God is to have faith in God’s love.

The Bible says that we did not choose God, but that God chose and called us. (John 15:16)

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.”  (John 6:44)

We would not have even wanted to come to God and be saved if He had not put it in our hearts to do so.

The Bible says that while we were in our mother’s womb He saw us and chose us. He ordained how we would look and he fashioned us in the way that would please Him. (Psalm 139)

When we were ready, He put it in our hearts to desire Him and come to Christ, and now that He has us nothing can separate us from His love.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”  (Rom. 8:35)

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”  (Rom. 8:37)

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,”  (Rom. 8:38)

“Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  (Rom. 8:39)

God loves us no matter what!

God’s love is not based upon anything that we have or have not done.

God doesn’t love us because we read the Bible, attend Church, spend time in prayer, or give offerings. He’s pleased that we do these things, but that is not what causes Him to love us.

God doesn’t even love us because we have quit sinning and love Him, for the Bible says:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  (Rom. 5:8)

God loves us simply because we exist.

“We love him, because he first loved us.”  (1John 4:19)

He loves us because we are. Nothing can change His love for us. That’s what perfect love is. Nothing can affect it. Nothing can alter it. It does not change.

And it’s not a general, “love for all” kind of love. It’s a personal, intimate kind of love.

Before Christ died on the cross, God’s love was a love for all mankind.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  (John 3:16)

It was because of His love for all men that He gave His son, but now that His son has been given, God’s love for us is not only perfect but also personal.

“But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”  (Matt. 10:30)

Like a father admiring his child sleeping in the crib, our Heavenly Father looks upon us daily and counts the hairs upon our heads. He knows exactly what we will need before we even need it, and has prepared it in advance.

“Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”  (Matt. 6:8)

“And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”  (Isaiah 65:24)

He who knows the ending from the beginning is never surprised or unprepared, but has already solved the problem before it even appears.

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”  (1Cor. 10:13)

The first step in having God’s peace is to understand and believe in God’s perfect love for us, that nothing can change or alter it, and that it’s not based upon anything except for the fact that we are His creation.

Because of His love for us, God will do whatever it takes to preserve us. Knowing and believing this will drive away all fear from our hearts and will prepare us to be filled with the peace of God that passes all understanding.

When I look at my precious granddaughter, sleeping in her crib either at her home or the nursery I set up in our home, it’s an overwhelming feeling of love that is difficult to describe!  Love, joy, peace, comfort, contentment, admiration, and the visions of her sweetness and how much she has grown in the 2 years, 3 mos. since she was born all bring tears to my eyes!  I just can’t help it!  That’s why I loved reading this paragraph:

Like a father admiring his child sleeping in the crib, our Heavenly Father looks upon us daily and counts the hairs upon our heads. He knows exactly what we will need before we even need it, and has prepared it in advance.

Yes!  God knew what I needed at this particular time in my faith-filled journey in this life and He led me to Mr. Candy’s essay today.

Here is what I wrote right after reading the essay:

Trying to figure out why certain people do things to hurt one another can be a daunting task.  Especially when someone who has shown steadfast love for you, but then suddenly does or says something completely out of character (especially when they claim to be a church attending born-again Christian), it can cause a huge amount of sorrow and grief; the kind of which is very difficult to overcome on your own.  That is when God’s love comes in precisely because it is the ultimate love that no man or woman could ever give.  God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ, is the kind of love that surpasses all understanding.  It’s the type of love that never leaves you nor forsakes you.  It is never superficial or dependent upon the whims of mankind, which can change and shift at any moment during our journey upon this earth.

Nope!

God is my forever beloved and He is mine!  How do I claim to know this?  Through God’s written Word, the Bible, and His Living Word, Jesus Christ!

These thoughts came to mind because of a struggle that I have been experiencing of late.  It has gone on for over three months now and it had the power to cause much grief and potentially harm my day to day life and even my current walk with God.  The details, at this moment in time, are not necessary to share here.  I think that many people have suffered the same type of pain, grief, and sadness due to a person refusing to answer a plea for genuine forgiveness and reconciliation.  But God is so good, that He doesn’t leave us alone in our grief!  He often alerts us and sends other people with whom we love – including family members and friends – who offer condolences for the pain being inflicted by another and suffered by us; as well as the comfort of words and prayer which can lift us up out of our doldrums, fear, anxiety, pain and sadness.  The people in our lives who do this are truly a God-send!  And, that is the point of this post.  If flawed, sin-infected (but now forgiven by Christ) individuals can do that for us, how much more can God Almighty’s perfect love and presence in our lives do for us?

Overcome Discouragement

October 12, 2017

I love to read the encounters that Jesus had with individuals in Matthew 9. What He said back to them contains many examples of priceless wisdom.

In Matthew 9:2, (link above) Jesus saw the faith of those who brought the paralytic to Him.  When Jesus said, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” the paralytic was cured.  However, when the doubting scribes chastised Him through saying out loud, “The Man blasphemes,” Jesus also knew what was in their hearts and said back to them,  “Why do you think evil in your hearts?  “For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?  “But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” And he arose and departed to his house.  Matthew 9: 4-7

What is interesting to note, is the fact that the “multitudes” had a very positive reaction to this, whereas the ‘scribes’ accused Jesus of blasphemy.

Mat 9:8
Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled[fn] and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

Further on in the chapter, the Pharisees asked several more questions like, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” and “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often,[fn] but Your disciples do not fast?”

Jesus’ answer to them was epic!

Mat 9:15
And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Also, see within these verses (note: some don’t apply) how often Jesus Christ is referred to as the “Bridegroom” and the Church (believers, not any building) is referred to as the “bride.”

All of the continuing turmoil that is going on here in America, as well as around the world can be very discouraging. Hurricanes causing death and destruction, flooding damaging homes, electricity taken away for weeks or months, wildfires in Northern California engulfing over 3,500 homes, the horrible shooting at an open air concert in Las Vegas that killed 48 people and injured 500 others, the threats of nuclear war with North Korea and the ongoing attack of global radical Islamic Jihad!  Adding to the misery are those “hidden culprits” in government (a.k.a. “The Deep State”) and the media of mass deception that continually lies to the public and puts forth propaganda in order to push forward their own evil agenda.  Such awful events can cause heartache, depression, hopelessness; loss of joy in this life, discouragement and no peace.

From the Christian perspective, the truth is that we will never have peace in the world until individuals have peace with God.  The only way to have peace with God is to repent and confess our sins at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ, ask for forgiveness, and welcome the Holy Spirit into our hearts for the salvation of our souls.

During this time of hatred often being spewed against Christians, conservatives, white people etc. by groups whose goal is to demonize those of us with such beliefs and characteristics; it can be hard to witness to them about Jesus Christ.  Many just don’t want to hear it!  They have put up their hearts of stone against any conversation that they don’t agree with and/or hate, and therefore refuse to listen or even discuss the issues calmly.

It is often my prayer that people who are searching for answers would find this blog and read something here that would help them to at least consider Jesus Christ and encourage them to read the Bible.  After all, the Bible is the best selling book of all time!

Here are some quotes from people who have prayed and asked for supernatural help in loving those who seem “un-lovable” at times; that also helped to remind themselves of all the blessings in life.

“This Joy that I have the world didn’t give it and the world can’t take it away.”

“I have to learn that as long as I have Jesus in my heart, I can find joy in everyday life, no matter how gloomy life may be around me.”

“My joy is dependent on Him, not me or my circumstances and if I am struggling to feel joyful, time in praise and worship – redirects my eyes back to Him, always lifting me up again.”

“God has transformed my life through peace because I was a person that was always stressed, never settled down, worried all the time.  By reading in the Bible, it has helped me to transform and live one day at a time and not to worry about so much.”

When I get discouraged, the following verses always lift me right back up and bring comfort and joy in the midst of whatever is happening in this world:

Rom 8:35

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Rom 8:36

As it is written:

“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”[fn]

Rom 8:37

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

Rom 8:38

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,

Rom 8:39

nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus speaking:

Jhn 16:33

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will[fn] have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Peace In Fearful Times

April 24, 2017

Ever since the very contentious election of 2016, I have found that many people are still so angry because their candidate of choice didn’t win. Also, they tend to be very vicious against those who voted for the candidate that won the election. It has come to the point where I don’t even want to try to discuss politics with anyone! Personally, I thought that the vitriol would have calmed down by now, but it seems to be getting worse every day.  How very sad…

No matter which side of the political spectrum you are on, dear readers, many believe that we are living in fearful times.  What’s more, the enemies of the United States and Her allies (enemies that include worldwide spread of Radical Islamist Terrorists, Iran, Syria, North Korea, and yes…Russia) stand ready to attack at any time.  Some are doing a lot of sabre rattling, others are terrorists who continue to attack in Europe and elsewhere; while others are downright determined to destroy the West from within our borders and are patiently planning and plotting our ultimate demise.

Personally, I thank God that we have a strong military (and, a friend in the White House who allow our military to do its job!) which stands ready to do whatever it may take to keep our enemies in check and/or do what is necessary to protect our beloved United States of America and Her allies.  “Peace through strength” used to be our motto, and I’m hopeful that it is back again.

With that brief synopsis written, the real purpose of this post is to share how we, as Christians, can have peace in fearful times.

Pastor Doug at NewLife Christian Fellowship in San Diego had this to say back in March, 2017:

Today we will be talking about “Peace.”  If we read the New Testament letters looking to find Bible verses about peace, we find a specific greeting used sixteen time:  “Grace and Peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”  Yet, there is more to “Grace and Peace” than a simple greeting.  Peace, like creation is not an accident.  it is not a condition invented by psychology.  God designed it, understands it, and gives it to those He calls. True peace comes from a saving knowledge of Jesus.  Peace was designed by God, and comes through the blood of Jesus.

Peace is listed in the top three characteristics of the fruit of the spirit.  Without love, joy, and peace, there is little hope of accomplishing forbearance (longsuffering), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control.  All of those characteristics are predicated on the love, joy, and peace of God.  The peace of God must be evident in us.  Others need to see what we have and desire to have it.  Then we can be peacemakers, able to share the love of God with a troubled world.  All too often we lose our peace in the midst of tragedy and the circumstances of life.  When we do that, we have nothing to offer a watching world.  If a neighbor comes to us distraught over tragedy and finds us just as undone, what testimony have we given about the peace of Christ, which He promised?  It is the Christians in a community who should be able to offer a word of encouragement and comfort during difficult times.  But we can only do that if we possess the peace of Christ – that peace which He purchased for us at the price of His own blood.”

There is nothing more blessed than sewing peace into the lives of those around you.  They need Jesus, the only source of peace, and you have what they need.  Be a peacemaker!

~ Pastor Doug

The Book of Acts 18:1 – 22:29 helps us to discover the answer to peace in fearful times.

How can we have peace in such a time as this?

  1.  Learn to fear (meaning, “be in awe”) of God.  See Hebrews 12:28-29; Ephesians 6:5; Philippians 2:12; Proverbs 3:7; 14:27; Matthew 10:28; Psalms 56:11
  2. Tell God.  Philippians 4:4-7; Matthew 23:37
  3. Trust God.  Acts 22; 2 Corinthians 1:9-10; 2 Timothy 1:12
  4. Obey God.  We need to know what God wants us to be like in order to obey Him!  We find this in His Word, the Bible, and in the Living Word, Jesus Christ!  See Acts 18; 19:11, 20

What is the single most common command in the Bible?

Answer:  “Fear not.”

The terms “fear” and “not” appear 129 times in the NKJV and 11 exact phrases shown first at this link.

In my notes at the end of the sermon, I wrote:

Trust in spite of appearances. Fear makes things worse than they are. When we obey God in spite of our fear – that is when we are equipped by God.
